Artist Statement
I create abstract paintings on deep wood panels, using oil paint as my primary medium. The wood's solid framework allows me to alter the canvas, adding a dimensional element. Often, I sand down the corners of the panels, adjusting their form to reflect the imperfect nature of my creative process and to present a worn sculptural appearance. Texture and color are the central components of my art. I apply numerous layers of paint, building up the surface to create depth. At times, I carve into the paint, revealing the hues beneath. I invite viewers to engage with the work to connect with their own meaning for it. This is why I employ a numbering system to identify the majority of the pieces in this series, leaving you to decide what the title should be.
My Story
The librarian of my 2nd grade class chose to show us the book Drummer Hoff. After reading each page she turned the opened book toward her students so that we could see the illustrations. I sat cross-legged, directly in front of her, and knew instantly what I wanted to be when I grew up.
Art has always been my love. I took my grandmother’s old oil paints, apprenticed with a potter, paint all the time and stare at people’s teeth to a fault. (Teeth are the only things that don’t change much).
